"Perfect case to go with media center" 2010-01-22
By Gabriel Weatherhead
Not only does this case look nice and match my mac mini perfectly but it's quiet and fast. I recently setup a Mac Mini as a home theater PC and decided to add some external storage for all of the media. It was an easy task. The case just works and looks right.

"Amazing product" 2010-01-19
By Alecx J
My Western Digital MyBook Essential Edition 500GB drive ceased to operate. I almost cried thinking the whole drive had failed. Had had the drive since July of 2008. I Googled the web and found that usually a power supply can be the issue, after realizing that the drive still tried to spin but there was no power to keep it going. The answers I found all suggested a new enclosure. And that's when I started looking on Amazon for a good deal. I use a Macbook, so I wanted something reliable and just as good as Apple. Macally gets great reviews, so I went for it. The MyBook was easy to pry open with instructions, revealing a SATA drive. I had used just USB2.0 before, but went for this for its Firewire (my first FW device!) I just use that now. I simply followed the instructions using the screwdriver. Slid the drive in and powered up. I have never had a desktop tower before, so I had had no previous experience with this kind of device (the cables, the internals, etc.) I'm a novice, definitely. But the setup was easy. I clicked the power button and voila! My hard drive lived once more. All my media was safe - my five year old pics, my music videos, my movies, TV shows, etc. Great product, easy to use, and looks beautiful on my desk.

"Chronic oversleeper" 2009-12-31
By Copter Pilot (Alexandria, VA)
Looks good, works well... until it goes to sleep, and then it will refuse to wake up. It locks up the entire computer (Mac Mini) until I manually power off/power on the drive unit. This happens every day and makes the drive virtually unusable. I tried adjusting the power saving feature to both extremes to no effect. The discussion boards explain the power supply as the problem, particularly when powering the larger (1 TB or greater) drives and that is indeed what I'm using. Hopefully tech support will send me a higher capacity power supply but even if they do, this type of problem should never have been an issue to begin with.

"Fantastic Storage Enclosure" 2009-12-16
By J. Smith (Newport News, VA)
I use this enclosure with a Hitachi 1TB 7200RPM drive connected to a Macbook Pro via Firewire. It works perfectly, I haven't experienced any power issues like other readers have seen. The number one feature I like is the looks and it doesn't fail you in person. The only problem I have seen is that if you want the anti-vibration pads put on the device you have to screw some ugly looking "feet" extensions onto the bottom and then attached the rubber pads. But if you are worried the device tipping over then use the extra feet extensions to stabilize the drive enclosure.

Also note, if you have a newer Mac or PC with Firewire 800 you will need to buy a Firewire 400 to Firewire 800 cable assembly. The Firewire cable included is a 400 to 400 cable, which can be useful for connecting this device to another one.

"Very good for the price" 2009-12-23
By Nathan Beauchamp (Oak Park, IL USA)
I bought this to facilitate replacing a hard drive in an older model notebook using Arconis True Image. I didn't need a high quality enclosure, just one that would get the job done while transfer files from my old hard drive to the new one. This enclosure worked perfectly for my purposes and now serves as a back up drive for the computer.

Pros:

1) Price is right
2) A very nice looking enclosure
3) Good transfer speeds over USB 2.0

Cons:

1) Not impressive in build quality. The tiny screws used to secure the drive closed are pretty poor.
2) Requires two USB connectors to function properly. If your laptop doesn't have two USB connectors right next to each other, this could prevent you from using the drive at all.

Conclusions:

This is a very inexpensive enclosure that is ideal if you plan on giving it light use. If you need a high quality enclosure, you might want to choose a different one.

"Life saver" 2009-10-22
By Bits n Bytes (Atlanta, GA United States)
I have to admit I was a bit skeptical when I bought this device. The reviews were mixed, but because it was only $12.50, I figured what did I have to lose? The background problem...all of a sudden my 7 year old Dell Inspiron 9100 would not boot. So I bought this to try to salvage what was on my hard drive...it took me longer to open the package than it did to begin recovering my files! This drive saved me! How many times have you been asked (after your computer crashes) did you backup everything?? I can now say that my computer crashed, and then I backed up everything....thanks to this product.

This isn't a style product. It's not gold plated, it's not air conditioned, no sexy rubber feet...it's simply a tool that does as advertised.

I also read other reviews complaining about it not working for hard drives larger than 30GB. Not true for me. My hard drive was 40 GB, and it read and copied my drive with no problems.

"Works as Advertised. A Bit Chintzy" 2009-09-23
By M. Meikle (Richmond, Virginia USA)
I purchased two of these enclosures due to an Alienware laptop that bit the dust. A minor note, don't buy Alienware products they are awful.
The kits are extremely simple to use and worked without issue. Windows Vista picked up the drive as soon as it was plugged in and installed the correct drivers. Amazing I know :)
It is nice that the kit also comes with a dual USB cable to ensure you can power larger hard drives. This came in handy since I had two 100 gig drives that needed more power.
The only quibble I had with the kit was the quality of the fasteners and enclosed screwdriver. Both are very cheap and if you need to apply any sort of force to fasten the faceplate to the shell, you will strip the heads off the screwdriver or screws. So it's a good idea to have your own screwdriver for the assembly.

"It works as intended and nicely built" 2010-01-27

When I upgraded my gf's HDD in her notebook that left us with a spare 160GB HDD laying around.

Enter the HDD Enclosure and BLAMO! Instant 160GB USB HDD gift for my friend, whom uses it to transfer movies from his tower to his wife's laptop.

He dropped it once on a carpeted floor and plugged it in and it still worked (don't try that people it was an accident - he has children).

All in all a great drive enclosure.

"It works great, but I recommend screwless designs" 2010-01-20
By Sylvan (Wisconsin, USA)
I got this enclosure about a week ago. It didn't come with a tool, so I had to get a set of precision screwdrivers before I could use it. Once I had screwdrivers, the screws were so tight that I stripped 3 of the 4 screws holding it together. Now that the case is all in pieces and taped together, the device works perfectly with the 80GB drive I took out of my PS3. I think I will invest in one of the screwless enclosures before my upcoming trip to China.

"Great fit, finish and operation" 2010-01-15
By Michael Carnell (Charleston, SC)
I upgraded the hard drive in my MacBook, so I put the 160gig SATA drive from it into this case and it worked just fine. Then reconsidered and took that one out and put an 80 gig drive in it instead. Again, everything worked just fine. The fit of the drive inside is just right so there is no "clunking" around or shifting fo the drive. The screws worked perfectly, and the final product is a very attractive portable drive. Highly recommended and inexpensive!

"Spotty drive recognition....required more power input" 2010-01-10
By J. Nixon (Savannah, GA USA)
Bought this based on previous positive reviews. Goal was to clone hard drive of MacBook to larger replacement drive in enclosure and then remove the drive and place it in the MacBook. First problem: Mac wouldn't initially recognize drive in the enclosure to allow me to format it. Finally recognized after I connected both the USB connections simultaneously to provide more power, as the instructions suggested. Using SuperDuper program was able to get new clone on drive in the enclosure. But then the cloned drive in the enclosure wouldn't be recognized by the MacBook when connected by USB. The drive just disappeared. Was about to give up when I took the cloned hard drive out of the enclosure and installed inside the Macbook where it worked fine. So drive was fine inside the Mac but not when inside the enclosure and connected to Mac USB port. I suspect it was because it was only getting sufficient power inside the Mac to be recognized or some problem with the SATA/USB interface in the enclosure. Enclosure/SATA interface was sporadic at best for connecting a hard drive to Mac...problematic getting the drive recognized. I always made sure the 2 USB connections from the enclosure were attached directly to computer USB inputs to get good power, but that didn't seem to be enough. Even though I was only using the enclosure as an interim housing for the drive before inserting in the MacBook, it was useless to then use as advertised as an external drive housing. Returned enclosure. Plan to upgrade drive in my newer Mac Book but have ordered Cables To Go 30504 USB 2.0 to IDE or Serial ATA Drive Adapter (Black) expecting it will provide more reliable connectivity to hard drive.

"Nice quality, but..." 2010-01-22
By Leonardo (Alaska)
Works perfectly, but... As for the electronic interface and functioning, this enclosure works perfectly. The finish and quality are also very good. Great price! The problem I faced was that the SATA 2.5" drive from my son's laptop would not fit inside the enclosure! The sides of the hard drive and the retention rails in the enclosure did not line up. Go figure! The new SATA 2.5" drive that I purchased my son as a backup/image drive fit perfectly. I did not know there were external differences in SATA laptop drives big enough to prevent a drive from fitting into an enclosure. Strange, but true. I would still definitely recommend this enclosure. If you have a new drive you want to use it with, there should be no problem.

Very good looking; the USB connection worked as advertised. I used it to convert my laptop's old hard drive (I upgraded the hard drive)to an archive drive. For $20, I've got a really nice backup system that I can carry around in my pocket.

"Watch out when opening." 2010-01-16
By A. Jauregui (California)
When I opened the case, I was not careful with removing the screws and accounting for gravity. This resulted in the contents of the enclosure to spill out and drop on the floor. While some claim its fragile and doesn't hold an HDD all that well, it stood up well to the beating I initially gave it and functions perfectly. It has not let me down yet and it does what its supposed to do very well.

"Be careful during installation- I almost broke the PCB" 2010-01-14
By Santu (houston)
The manual instructions are incorrect.
I almost broke the printed circuit board(PCB) when I tried to pull it out from the back.

What you need to do is:
(back= where the two screws are there
front=where the indicator light is there)

1. Remove the two screws from the back and remove the plastic face plate
2. Push the pcb gently from the back or pull it from front. It will come out from the front
3. screw the hard disk to the pcb using supplied four screws
4. slide it into the enclosure from the front and screw the remaining two screws on the back.

It is great looking enclosure. But the two sides are plastic. It would have been nice if they were also aluminum.

"Reasonably priced; nice fit and finish: GIANT wall wart!!!" 2010-01-30
By 35-year Technology Consumer (Maryland, USA)
This is a a fine, reasonably priced SATA hard drive enclosure.

Installation of the hard drive is straightforward:
(1) Slide out the mounting tray from the enclosure.
(2) Mate the fixed SATA/power plugs on the hard drive to their partners on the mounting tray.
(3) Secure the hard drive to the mounting tray with four included screws
(4) Slide the tray back in most of the way
(5) Attach the three-pin power/disk activity LED connector wire
(6) Slide the mounting tray in the rest of the way
(7) Secure the rear panel with two more screws (also included).

Included in the box:
-Stand for vertical placement (or it can sit horizontally on four small rubber feet).
-Power cord (with the *biggest* wall wart you've ever seen!),
-USB cable
-Driver disk for Windows 98 (it works natively with newer versions of Windows; I checked it with machines running both XP Home and Windows 7 Professional).

As with anything electronic, time will tell about its durability (but its always a good sign when they work out of the box as mine did).

Why not five stars?

Three things:
(1) BEWARE! The "wall wart" for plugging this in to your AC power source is HUGE (1.25 inches thick and approximately 2.5 x 3 inches in area). Even on a power strip with wide gaps between outlets, expect to give up two outlets to accommodate this. Surely this bulk could have been worked into the case instead, or simply made smaller.
(2) The power switch is on the rear of the case. It would be better placed in front, easily accessible to users.
(3) Included instructions are silly, Ikea-like pictograms. While they are clear enough, their content will probably be obvious to those experienced with other enclosures while remaining inscrutable to technical novices.

"Went to an early grave" 2010-01-04

I installed a WD 1TB HD in the Antec it was recognized by my PC and I formatted it without problem. During file transfer there was an error. After restarting the PC and Antec, the Antec HD could not be found. Listening closely to the enclosure verified that the HD was not spinning on power-up. The HD worked fine when it was installed directly in the computer, but did not work when reinstalled in the Antec. So HD=fine. Antec=FUBAR.

Installing the HD was easy. This is a good thing since the only documentation that came with the Antec was a single sheet of illustrations.

The original packing was destroyed with other Christmas paper and boxes. So I'm stuck with this piece of junk.

Next time I'll pay a bit more for a better product.

"Initial impressions" 2010-01-28
By Richmix
I bought two of these enclosures to house WD Caviar Green drives. I haven't yet had an opportunity to try out the eSATA feature because I don't have cables (the unit only comes with a USB cable and a power adapter). I intend to purchase these cables separately, but keep this in mind if you want eSATA. Add about $5 on to cover the cost of an eSATA cable if you don't already have one.

Build quality of the enclosures is good. When I first ordered them, I thought from the pictures that they were white. They aren't. They are aluminum with a normal, brushed aluminum finish. They look good. The back panel with the connectors is plastic, but this is hardly an issue since, well, it's the back. It's rarely seen, by me or anyone else. The power button does glow brightly (blue) when the unit is on, but I don't find this intrusive. It's not -as- bright as some other devices I've used, and with a drive enclosure, you can simply turn it around. I don't recommend tape over the button, though, since it's actually a button and not just a light.

The drive carrier slides into the aluminum casing using guide rails. This makes installation a snap. Just unscrew the two screws securing the plastic back to the carrier, and slide the whole thing out. However, while I appreciate the fluidity of installation, the carrier doesn't fit very snugly into the casing; it stays loose, partly as a product of the design decision to allow the carrier to be easily removed. This means it rattles during operation. I've found this can be remedied by placing a phone book or other external drive on top of it when in use. The rattling is rather quiet, and though it is something I would expect from an inexpensive enclosure, it's still somewhat disappointing.

Because it's made of aluminum and because the front and back of the case have plenty of holes or vents, these enclosures are well-cooled. With my Green drives in them (WD15EARS and WD10EACS), they are cold to the touch even after being left on for all day and night. Since there is no active cooling (fans), I expect this means my drives will stay cool all the time, even if I never turn them off.

Several unusual design decisions hurt these otherwise excellent enclosures, though. The unit is very slick. If you don't use the provided rubbery "feet" and plan to keep it on a hard-top wood, plastic, or glass desk, expect it to slide around with even the slightest pressure. I mean slight--if the USB cable plugged into the back twists or bends even a little bit on its way to the computer, the torque of the twist will probably rotate the enclosure. This is annoying, but you can easily circumvent it by using the provided rubber feet.

The feet are not build directly onto the unit, though. They are separate; you screw them onto the unit whenever / if ever you feel so inclined. Their design flat out sucks. A single screw secures each of two plastic feet to the bottom of the unit. And I mean the bottom. If you want to use the feet, the only side of the case with screw holes to provide for their use are on two of the loopy protrusions on the case's edges. This means that, when using the feet, the case can only stand up vertically as shown in the Amazon picture. The feet, though, are wider than the protrusions: if you use them, you can't stack the enclosures horizontally. Alternatively, you can adhere the rubberized feet to one of the horizontal case faces. This would allow you to use the unit horizontally without sliding, however it would also prevent you from using the unit vertically. My advice: get third party rubber feet for horizontal use, and pray you're able to remove the feet when you need to. (I'll tell you why the praying is necessary right now.)

I'm also a little bit unsure about the ability to remove the feet. As I said before, the feet secure to the unit with a single screw, right in the middle of the foot. This allows the foot to rotate, which I find annoying. More annoying, though, and the part that makes me unsure, is that when you put the rubber pad on the foot itself, it covers the screw hole. This means you cannot use a screwdriver to remove or loosen the screw without removing the rubber pad and potentially ruining the adhesive. This might never become a problem because the adhesive itself seems to secure the top of the screw well, meaning you can just twist the feet to unscrew them, but I don't trust this solution. Because of this, since the ability to use the enclosures horizontally is very important to me, I don't feel comfortable using the feet at all. It would suck to have them get stuck in the unit.

Each unit comes with a 3ft USB cable and a much longer power cord. I'd have liked to see an eSATA cable or at least 6ft USB cable, but no dice. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase for the price. If you need an eSATA enclosure, this is the best value I've seen in this price range by far. If you plan to use it with USB, there may be better options, though there certainly are worse ones. This enclosure simply works and keeps your drives safe--two excellent qualities for one costing $30. If you want more, consider spending more.

Very nice little enclosure. I used it to bring a WD MyBook 750gb drive back to life after its enclosure failed.

It was entirely plug-and-play. Took only minutes to assemble, and the instructions, while accurate, were really not even needed. It was that simple.

It's quiet, too.

Longevity: no idea. Just got the thing, what am I, Nostradamus?

I'd definitely get another of these if I need one, or recommend it to people.

"Good, cheap drive enclosure" 2009-12-27
By J. Gaiser
Good, cheap drive enclosure. However, don't expect G-Drive quality despite the G-Drive styling. The plastic parts feel cheap, but so far the enclosure has held up.

"SATA I only?" 2009-11-06
By Ottokrat (San Jose, CA)
Have this unit and the more expensive, easy swap Sans Digital 3.5 Removable Bay Usb & Esata External Enclosure Usbesata Sata ii. (Note this other unit is sometimes listed as Sas Digital.) I also have several drives, all SATA II. But I only get SATA I when any of them are using this Macally unit; using the same cable, the same eSATA port on laptop, and the same drives (several tested), with the Sans Digital, and I get SATA II.
