"Misses the mark on important features" 2010-03-09

By Dean! (Dallas, TX)

This Zune sound dock was an unfortunate disappointment, severely lacking in basic functionality. A sound dock of any kind should be good in sound, features and convenience. I'll break down my experiences:

The Sound

-------------

1. Volume adjusts from 1 to 30, but is barely audible under 11. In fact, 18 seems like a quiet whisper volume. Over volume 24, I could tell there was sound distortion and at 30 well, it was overpowering the speakers I thought I would break it. I'm relistening to it at volume 22 and it's not very loud and you can almost hear a static sound reproduction on a new Lady Gaga MP3. I chose various Genres of music (classical to hip hop to pop to rock) with different songs to determine the "loudness" acceptable levels.

2. Bass was a bit "poppy" sounding as if there was no real bass, I'm not expecting a subwoofer thump, but for a company who specializes in sound, I wasn't impressed. I have Altec computer speakers that sound FAR better.

The Features

--------------

1. It says it has HD Radio, but in fine print, it doesn't have HD radio, the Zune HD has HD radio and you happen to hear the sound from the Zune

2. It DOES have FM radio, which is actually a useless feature, because all Zunes (1st to 3rd generation) have FM radios

3. I was shocked to find it has no clock function at all like other sound docks do. I mean, let's think about this, you can get a simple LED clock with alarm from Walmart for a few dollars - they couldn't have at least put a clock and alarm in this so I could put this on my nightstand and wake up to my Zune music, etc ?

4. Most people's nightstands aren't all that big in size, there's no room for this sound dock, plus my current clock radio.

5. The included remote and "integrated remote-holder" works for volume but won't control the Zune! See convenience section:

The Convenience

-----------------

1. This is the dumbest part of this sound dock. The included remote won't control any of the music functions of the Zune beyond Next, Previous and Pause. So let's say you've taken this to the patio and your friends complain they don't like the playlist you're on, well you have to undock the Zune, choose your playlist manually, and re-dock it. For people like me, I like diverse genres of music plus some audiobooks, so simply putting your *entire* collection on shuffle is not an option (unless you're prepared to hit "Next" after every other song). So this sound dock really scores bad on convenience.

2. Here's the next dumb part of this sound dock - it doesn't even transmit signals using the original Zune remote! So fine, maybe the included remote doesn't control the Zune, but at least allow it to use the Zune remote, nope won't work.

Summary and Areas for Improvement

-----------------------------------

1. No clock radio/alarm - this would be a huge improvement!

2. Shuffle your Entire Music Collection or nothing - the included remote nor the Zune remote won't control any music functions beyond Play/Pause or Next/Previous - that's it...no remote control choosing of playlists or other music, etc. (Ie. Lets say you put this on the deck for a party, having a remote in your lawn chair to control different music sure would be nice, wouldn't it?)

3. Volume is barely audible under 11 on a scale of 1 to 30 and 18 is a casual whisper, yet volume 24 to 30 the sound already distorts

4. Bass is "poppy" at times

5. A sound dock needs good sound, common-sense features, and to be convenient - it severely lacks in these areas as described above.

"Must have for Zune HD owners" 2010-04-14

By Christian Rios (Hattiesburg, MS USA)

You can plug the Zune HD to this dock and stream music to your TV or Receiver. It can also play video at 720p on your TV. It has a good interface and the remote even though feels cheaply made, it does the job. I recommend this over the most expensive version of the dock. If you already have an HDMI compatible device, all you need is to buy a cheap HDMI cable and for power if you do not have a USB port available nearby get one of those cheap USB to AC adapter from [...] or right here in amazon. Picture and sound quality is decent and you will not need to buy proprietary docks for all your equipment.

"Don't buy this if you want function out of the remote." 2010-03-05

By IowaGuy (Central Iowa)

I really want to love my Zune HD, but Microsoft keeps doing things that are intentionally frustrating, and I think I've finally given up hope. The last straw: I received the Sync Dock today, and hoped to use it at work on my desk. However, unless you plug the dock into a television, the remote won't allow you to navigate through the menus. You can press play, you can adjust the volume, and you can jump back and forth between tracks within the playlist, but you can't navigate the menus. Want to go to a completely different artist?...no can do. Want to jump to a podcast?.....Sorry! I called support, and apparently this is by design. HUH?

Why....why.....WHY would you design it like this?

 "Not What I Thought" 2010-02-20

By Darrell Totman

First, this does NOT come with a "Small and convenient AC adapter." That was a mistake on Microsoft's description. Second, you can not use this to listen to the HD radio through your computer. That last point is the main reason I bought this dock and I suppose it was my lack of information on what it would do for me. The documentation provided with this device is minimal and almost impossible to see. Some of the poorest I have ever received for an electronic device. The online info is not much better, but you can read that. It does its job and it looks good, but I was disappointed.

 "Zune HD AV Dock" 2010-02-17

By G. Hines (Saratoga Cty NY)

After a bit of trouble the AV Dock works flawlessly.

I purchased it without power supply and cables. Found it was essential that the dock is powered by USB.

This dock is one of the few HDMI devices that makes an "automatic" HDMI splitter switch work properly.

Plugging in the Zune HD makes the switch change from Cable Box to DOCK.

Will be much more useful after this Spring when Microsoft puts out firmware upgrade to be able to use Xvid Codec.

 "Audio only review" 2010-02-12

By Julio Vaunswa (WI)

Here are some key points that would have helped me when buying this as the information was not easy to access under specifications.

On the back it has the following outputs:optical out, HDMI,3.5mm output(headphone jack),USB male and HD radio antenna.

Now I am only using this in my car under my center console, this is only connected to my car by USB(for power) and then I have a 3.5mm jack plugged in to the stereo and it sounds great!!

BUT the problem is that once the power is turned off the unit keeps playing, on the regular Zunes it would make the Zune go into pause mode which it then would go into a sleep/shutdown mode. This shouldn't be a big deal as long as you don't have the unit on repeat or it will run out of juice.

--My biggest gripe(the reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 5) is about the fact that the remote is almost useless when using the dock for using the Zune while on the dock. Now I am not using this for video so this is only for controlling the zune for music. The remote only lets you skip tracks and play/pause, and go back to the main zune screen. Pretty crappy as the 80/120 zune docks let you change modes on the zune from music to radio or go into settings. Yes this means that while its on the dock you have to still use the touchscreen to find the artist and select albums then you can use the remote to skip tracks,or pause the music.

If this is not a problem for you then by all means get the dock as it's well constructed and the emblem on the front adds a small cool factor to boot.

***Update Looks like the unit was updated so when you cut power the unit pauses and goes to sleep. With this added I upgraded the star status to 4.

"Good except for one thing" 2010-04-11

By Minskeapolis NeoCon (Peoples Republic of Minnesota)

Nice dock for the Zune. It's small, has a nice rubber grip pad on the bottom, and is very easy to set up and use.

The only downside is that when using the radio, I had to move the speaker connection from the back of the dock to the headphone jack on the Zune itself because the Zune uses that jack as an antennae for the radio. I don't know if there is any way the dock could conceivably route the radio antennae signal from the headphone jack to the dock, but I was unable to receive a good radio signal through the dock itself.

Still, for ease of use and listening to music from the Zune, this dock is first rate. It keeps my Zune charged and ready to go.

"Used with 120 with only minor issues" 2009-12-26

By B. Walker (Wisconsin, United States)

The dock comes with adaptors, none labeled specifically for the 120, but other reviewers stated that Zune's customer service said it would work, so I gave it a shot. I used the 80's adaptor and while the 120 rested a little unsteadily, it was connected enough to start charging. Since I still seemed to be having some issues with getting a really solid charge, I followed the Zune tech site's suggestion and after a half hour on the dock, connected it back to the computer and it worked perfectly.

After the initial full charge using the dock and computer, we're able to use the dock alone now. Apart from the semi-wobbly condition, I would still recommend it for owners of the 120 as an alternate charge source - I'm not sure if making some alterations to the adaptor would help, but we may try that to address the unsteadiness issue.

 "Great dock" 2010-04-09

By Matt

This thing generates amazing sound at mid to high volume, but lacks bass and definition at low volume. When it comes to quiet, ambient listening, the Bose sound dock is definitely better. However, considering the vast price difference between the two, this Kicker dock is of much better value.

Also, a built in battery would have been nice in terms of portability. but maybe they didn't include a battery because the sub uses up so much power?

either way, i am very happy with this product.

 "Wow!!!!!" 2010-04-07

By J. Degaro (Waukesha, WI USA)

I was very surprised at the amount of output this little system has. The only thing that was a little unexpected was the fact that the sub on the back is a passive radiator and not active. It still has great sound quality and bass so that is a minimal downfall. The price was right too. My wife enjoys it very much and uses it daily.

"Get one while you can" 2010-03-21

By Kathryn Ann Waite Kelley (SAVANNAH, GEORGIA, US)

The Kicker delivers warm, rich sound and lots of volume. The remote works well, except you still have to be close enough to read the screen on the Zune. I have a small home recording studio, and the Kicker's sound quality is as good if not better than my studio speakers. There's no EQ, but the treble/bass controls are pretty wide so you don't really need it. I also like that it has an aux. in and came with the 1/8 cable so if you have a different mp3 player you can still use it.

The volume/quality is way better than you would expect from those little speakers-- it really makes you want to know what's inside.

 "Love it!" 2010-03-18

By A. Andrews (Milwuakee, WI)

I recently bought a Zune HD and wanted a sound dock. After looking at the few that are available for the Zune, I settled on the Kicker ZK500. I had read the great reviews, but was still skeptical about the sound from a unit of that size. I was pleasantly suprised to say the least. I listen to hard rock and music with a lot of base, and it is often turned up loud. This system delivers. The sound quality is awesome with no distortion even at the highest sound level.

My only gripe is that the remote does not fully function with the Zune HD. As other reviewers have stated, the basic functions work (volume, skip tracks, etc.) but you can't access the Zune's menu through the remote. In my opinion, this is only a minor drawback to the quality of sound you get from this product. If you're looking for a speaker dock to rock out your Zune on, spend the extra money and go with this product. You won't be sorry.

 "No sound" 2010-03-18

By H. Richitt (Virginia, USA)

I was apprehensive about these speakers because some people have said that they destroyed their zunes. However, I decided to give them a try because I've heard the sound quality is amazing.

Well, it didn't destroy my zune, but it wouldn't play it either. The zune connected fine but no sound would come out. The remote for the speakers wouldn't do anything either. I even tried connecting it, not using the dock but instead the auxiliary input, still nothing. It's like the speakers refused to recognize my zune was connected to it.

Out of curiosity I connected by sister's zune, and it worked just fine. Considering we have the same model, the same software (we use the same computer), and they were purchased around the same time, it just baffles me why one would work and the other wouldn't.

I would heed the warnings here, and purchase a different set of speakers.

 "Works as advertised" 2010-03-30

By Mark Wooldridge (Colorado, USA)

Let me start by saying I'm a tad jaded about technology, so I don't tend to get the 'wow' factor with too many things.

That being said, the Zune HD dock works as it says it does. I use it almost every day and it comes in handy. I use it on my bedroom TV and utilize the Zune connector on XBox 360 on another TV for the same content. Can't comment on the HD quality as I'm using it on a standard def TV right now.

It has a few quirks in that sometimes the Zune HD/dock connection doesn't work. In those instances, you can either reset the Zune or hardwire sync it to your PC for a normal sync - then it seems to work fine. It sometimes senses whatever problem causes this on it's own and the Zune will reboot when you put it on the dock prior to functioning correctly. Seems to be a common if minor annoyance, but when I first got this and it didn't connect, it took some online research to figure it out.

The remote is the other quirk. You have to really have a clear view of the dock for the remote to function as you'd expect it to.

Overall, this is a solid, functional product.

"Perfect for 120GB Zune but will does not allow use with 30GB model." 2010-03-29

By R. Donnell (Wisconsin)

After upgrading from 30GB Zune to 120GB model it became evident that the new AV HD dock was a must. While the AV docks are supposed to be compatible across all Zune models, that is not entirely true. The 120GB model does just barely squeeze into the older original AV dock but it is a tight fit and probably borderline risky to damaging the dock. Conversely the 30GB model does NOT into the new AV HD dock. So that forces a purchase of the newer AV HD dock to accommodate the 120GB unit and prevent risk of damage. Incidentally, the HD aspect of the new AV dock serves no function for the 120GB Zune since it is not an HD capable player.

 "Broke!" 2010-03-09

By Richard B. Middleton

I wish I could have had a chance to actually use the thing. I plugged it in, got audio out of my stereo. Tried to get video, and it was no go. Took the Zune out, checked the tv output selection, and then reseated the Zune into the dock. Now there is no video OR audio out, and the remote doesn't even work anymore. I live overseas, and bought this in the states when visiting family. I am going to try to get the cheaper syncing dock station. After all, I already have the cables, and I already have a USB power connection. Maybe after I get one, I will come update this review.

"A few minor issues, but pretty cool overall." 2010-03-02

By B. Kelly (San Diego, CA)

I have been using the Zune A/V dock with my Zune HD at least 3 times a week since I got it a month or two ago. Due to the fact that we have a TVs in both the bedroom and the living room, the simplicity of moving the dock between the two rooms has been much appreciated. Its takes all of about 2 minutes to switch TVs, and that includes the time walking from room to room. Up until now I had simply been connecting my laptop to the TV with an S-video and audio output cables, rendering my not quite new laptop useless for the duration of the viewing. Now I have my laptop back and a remote that allows me to start the next episode from the comfort of my sofa. Navigating with the remote is easy and the interface is almost exactly like on the Zune itself. Picture quality is just fine for our liking, but I am no expert in that respect. Also, it works with both standard def. and HD TVs, as long as the SD TV has a RCA inputs. HD uses an HDMI cable of course.

Now for the gripes:

For some reason, you have to completely power off the Zune before you place it in the dock. I realize this is an issue with the Zune, not the dock, but it still seems relevant. I had a couple days of frustration before I found the solution in some Zune forum. I would imagine this will be eventually be fixed in a software update at some point. It is not really a big deal, but it is kind of annoying.

The other issue is the price. It just seems a little high. Don't get me wrong, the dock does what it is supposed to and does it well for the most part. It just seems a bit high to me.

Overall, I am very happy with it and can't honestly say I wouldn't buy it all over again knowing what I know now. In fact, the A/V output capability of the Zune HD has resulted in it being used almost exclusively in the house, as opposed to the car for which it was originally purchased.
