After ordering a FC-11, I was sent an FC-10 and was told that "they are inerchangeable." I tried it in a fairly expensive digital camera and the camera is permanently ruined. I cannot say for certain that the "wrong" battery killed it; however, it worked great until the previous FC-11 battery died. The specs show that the two models are NOT NECESSARILY interchangeable. I was credited, after abouttwo months, and was sent ANOTHER FC-10 (Not what I ordered) battery. These folks were friendly, but could NOT supply what was advertised. I have not yet heard from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

I have used the dual layer media only once so far but it worked well enough to store video data up to 47 gigs or so. The media claims 50 gigs but really you can't get 50 gigs on there. Same with the 25 gig, single layer media, you can only burn 23 gigs or so. I wish Sony would produce a 4x record speed version (like Panasonic has) and of course we are all waiting for this media to drop in price now that Blu-ray has won the HD media war. Tip: Be sure you understand what version of UDF you are working with prior to burning data to the disc. Some UDF only read on Vista software. I wasted two 25 gig discs learning this.

Another lifer sliding down the bleeding edge. I agree--spend another $10 to get the rewritable version.

After finally getting the settings on my Mac right (1x (ugh!!), buffer underrun protection), I managed to

successfully write 4 discs: 2 had verification failures on reread, 1 hung during verification, and 1 wrote/verified

successfully. I was thrilled--the first three attempts before calling the vendor re above cretinous parameter

settings are now...coasters. However, all in all, it's better than the 25 CDs I'd have to burn, but without charming multi-volume capability. I'm more or less happy, I guess, and think that I may be able to

read the 4 I have, if I ever need to, maybe. Hoping this gets cheaper, easier, faster soon.

I like the promise of Blue Ray, but as an old computer tech who's fought a lot of bleeding edge tech battles over the years, I have to warn you that the reliability just isn't there yet for the write-once disks. Although I haven't had any problems, I've heard of a number of ones relating to the write-once disks, which then become expensive "coasters." Instead, for now at least, choose the rewritable disks, which, although more expensive, you'll avoid costly failed disks until the write-once ones are more reliable.



These problems remind me of similar problems I had with ordinary CDs back in the days of early CD writer and DVD writer software. Back then, I wasted many CD and DVD disks until the software became less buggy. Still, I like the Blue Ray disks since they are cheaper for the same amount of storage than a comparable size mini cruzer, which in fact aren't even available at this size. The 15 gig mini cruzer that I bought was 100 bucks. The Blue Ray disk give you two to four times the capacity for significantly less. Unfortunately, compared to a mini cruzer RAM module, they are slow. Copying a 4 gig mini cruzer is around 5 minutes on my system. A 25 gig Blue Ray is over an hour, so be prepared for some long burn times. But overall, a big improvement in capacity over the previous standard.

About the best 50GB BD disk you can buy, but you would be much better off spending more for the rewritable version. Most of the BD burners for sale are bundled with CyberLink software which is very buggy. My first attempt with a Panasonic disk, the software crashed the computer and I got a $45.00 coaster (tax write-off). 2nd attempt with a Sony disk worked well.



Need patience for this backup method. Around 1 ½ hours to burn data even with a Gen 2 BD burner.

Bought this after it was recommended to me on the Soundslides board. I use it with my Edirol R-09 HR to record audio for photo slideshows. The Sony mic is compact, I didn't need an adapter for it to fit the Edirol and comes with a few accessories. The sound quality is excellent, it fits in my camera bag, it has a long cord, and I am not going to cry too much if I drop it as it wasn't that pricey. My biggest complaints are that if you aren't conscious of what you are doing, you can get alot of mic handling noise - the build of the mic handle seems to really accentuate it. Also it has an on/off/90 degree and 360 degree switch and I often forget to turn it off and it drains the battery. Still, it's an excellent mic for the price and for someone starting out doing simple interviews and so on. To hear a sample of it, click on the slideshow here.  "Useful mic priced lower than ever, but here are a few tips." 2009-06-07

This proven mic has come down in price, while the one below it--the Sony DS70--has remained pretty much the same. For the extra 15 bucks, the Sony MS907 is easily worth the upgrade. The only advantage of the DS70 is not having to worry about having a fresh battery installed. The MS907 sounds fuller and richer, but frankly I did not judge it to be superior to the overall effect of the 4-point microphone that comes with the popular Zoom H-2. Whether or not you choose to use it in place of the onboard mic of a high-end personal audio recorder really comes down to a matter of personal taste. On the other hand, if you've picked up the new Zoom H-4n, this Sony stereo mic would be an excellent choice for complementing the onboard ones since the new Zoom allows for use of onboard and external mics simultaneously.



As for recording to a software audio program on an iMac, that particular computer has an audio input that will accommodate the 3.5mm plug (but be aware that many computers do not have such an input--in that case, look at a USB mic such as those from Blue). Even with the right fit and a fresh battery, I found the MS907 to be somewhat underpowered for optimal results. It wasn't until I plugged it into an Onkyo preamp that I was satisfied. Again, I suspect that a mic with a USB connector would permit better gain levels with most computers.



There are adequate mic amps on Amazon for $20-$40, capable of boosting your signal by 48 volts, or 60 dbs. A Mac user willing to spend a bit more should look at the MXL Signal Booster Amp for Mac Computers, which costs a bit more but saves you the bother of USB conversion. Finally, if you're trying to make professional announcements for radio use, etc., you'll soon discover that, unless you're incapable of puckering (which means you're not much of a kisser), the plosives ("p" sounds) will run away with everything you try to say. The only solutions I've found are to write scripts that are devoid of plosives (the "voiced" "b" phoneme is almost as much of an offender as the voiceless "p" phoneme) or to pick up a "pop filter." The latter are little more than 6" circles of cheese cloth costing $20-$30 each, but I'm about to give in and order one from Amazon.



The last advice I'll offer is not to indulge in candy or a sweet soda while broadcasting. It'll thicken your saliva and make you sound like someone attempting to communicate with his dentist after being shot up with novocaine (or is it lidocaine, these days?)--in any case, it's sugar cane, and fuctose syrup, that will muck up your elocution, making your gums talk louder than your words.

I'm far from an expert on cammies and mics, but this is definately a great buy. I film concerts w/ a cammie that has an external mic output. This microphone has given me excellent results. Very, very clear sound. Have never gotten any hissing or cackling. Does a very good job at filtering out excess noise (i.e. people around you), and picks up the sounds of a concert well. You can also adjust how the mic picks up the audio. You can choose 90 degrees, which is basically straight ahead, or 180 degrees, which will pick up sounds from the side as well as straight ahead. A very good microphone, I highly recommend this item.

This mike not only is a major improvement over the little electret mike that comes with Sony MD recorders, but I also use it in a cheap little Olympus WS 310 recorder, and get amazing clarity and warmth.It makes all the difference. I bought this case because the color matches my new Sony digital camera. It is a snug fit on the DSC-W290 which is ok because I got the camera for it's small compact size. That being said, this case had no internal pockets so you cannot carry around a spare battery or memory card, securely anyway. The two zipper pulls are nice because it allows you to carry the camera enclosed in the case, by the strap. The package cautions that this case does not fit all Cyber-shots - surely not one much biggger than the W290 since the case bulges out slightly where it covers the lens.

BULD: The camera feels very plasticky to the touch. It feels less sturdy than i had imagined it to be.

The features are what you expect any DSLR to have.



PICTURE QUALITY: The pictures are always a little softer than i would like. I have seen pictures taken by entry level Canon and Nikon cameras and their photos can be nice and crisp. I tried meddling around with the f-stop to get sharper images but they always turned out a tinge soft.



BATTERY LIFE: OK. You can take it on a weekend trip without having to worry about recharging it.



OVERALL: I was disappointed with the overall performance of the camera. I would not recommend this camera to anyone else. I suggest going for a Canon or Nikon.

UPDATE: Its been a little over a year after buying the camera and it failed on me. The auto-focus mechanism doesnt work anymore and the camera is literally useless. Since i am out of warranty i went to the store and got an estimate for the repair. I was told it would cost me $298 plus parts. I am very disappointed with Sony.

with the 8gb card included i've taken in excess of 500 pictures w/memory to spare.

battery life is OUTSTANDING in my opinion. thinking maybe a higher end card will increase my speed w/the golf shots as w/it set on sport auto i only get 3-4 frames of a golfers' swing.

I have always used Canon before but I have also used a Nikon D-60 for a short while.



I obtained an A200W (two lenses kit). I generally liked the build, excellent features for the price and the fact that it includes two lenses (18-70 and 75-300). The menus are excellent and the battery life is extremely good.



However there are disappointing things also:



- ISO800 and above is almost unusable for professional work because of the noise.

- In low light situations (indoor and cloudy days) the noise and quality of the photo (white balance and in noise) is sometimes terrible.

- Pictures of kit lens 17-70 are disappointing in maximum zoom. Same goes with 75-300.

- Photos with flash (automatic mode) are sometimes overexposure and sometimes underexposure.

Logic would say that the newer Sony Alpha 230 is better than the Sony Alpha 200, but if you look at the specs (shorter battery life, smaller grip and a smaller zoom lens 18-55mm versus the 18-70mm kit lens that comes with the Alpha 200).



What I like about this camera:



- Long battery life

- Easy to use

- Feels substantial (more so than the entry level Nikons and Canons)

- The 18-70mm lens

- You can get used Minolta lenses for great prices on Amazon, eBay and Craigslist

- Image quality

- Focal points



What I am not crazy about:



- Shutter is loud

- Odd hot shoe

- Flash is a little weak (but stronger than the one on the A230)

- Slower
