BULD: The camera feels very plasticky to the touch. It feels less sturdy than i had imagined it to be.

The features are what you expect any DSLR to have.



PICTURE QUALITY: The pictures are always a little softer than i would like. I have seen pictures taken by entry level Canon and Nikon cameras and their photos can be nice and crisp. I tried meddling around with the f-stop to get sharper images but they always turned out a tinge soft.



BATTERY LIFE: OK. You can take it on a weekend trip without having to worry about recharging it.



OVERALL: I was disappointed with the overall performance of the camera. I would not recommend this camera to anyone else. I suggest going for a Canon or Nikon.

UPDATE: Its been a little over a year after buying the camera and it failed on me. The auto-focus mechanism doesnt work anymore and the camera is literally useless. Since i am out of warranty i went to the store and got an estimate for the repair. I was told it would cost me $298 plus parts. I am very disappointed with Sony.

i've ben an avid 35mm camera user for 20+yrs (purely amateur) but have some postcard

quality pictures

i looked @ the nikon but could'nt justify spending THAT much $$$ for a body and 1 lens



know i've only begun to utilize ths camera to its full potential.

with the 8gb card included i've taken in excess of 500 pictures w/memory to spare.

battery life is OUTSTANDING in my opinion. thinking maybe a higher end card will increase my speed w/the golf shots as w/it set on sport auto i only get 3-4 frames of a golfers' swing.



4.9/5 in my book i would HIGHLY recommend this to anyone taking the "leap" into high

end digital photgraphy.

I have always used Canon before but I have also used a Nikon D-60 for a short while.



I obtained an A200W (two lenses kit). I generally liked the build, excellent features for the price and the fact that it includes two lenses (18-70 and 75-300). The menus are excellent and the battery life is extremely good.



However there are disappointing things also:



- ISO800 and above is almost unusable for professional work because of the noise.

- In low light situations (indoor and cloudy days) the noise and quality of the photo (white balance and in noise) is sometimes terrible.

- Pictures of kit lens 17-70 are disappointing in maximum zoom. Same goes with 75-300.

- Photos with flash (automatic mode) are sometimes overexposure and sometimes underexposure.

Logic would say that the newer Sony Alpha 230 is better than the Sony Alpha 200, but if you look at the specs (shorter battery life, smaller grip and a smaller zoom lens 18-55mm versus the 18-70mm kit lens that comes with the Alpha 200).



What I like about this camera:



- Long battery life

- Easy to use

- Feels substantial (more so than the entry level Nikons and Canons)

- The 18-70mm lens

- You can get used Minolta lenses for great prices on Amazon, eBay and Craigslist

- Image quality

- Focal points



What I am not crazy about:



- Shutter is loud

- Odd hot shoe

- Flash is a little weak (but stronger than the one on the A230)

- Slower

I'm happy with this camera. However, the development of digital cameras is very fast so the camera is likely to be behind cutting edge in a couple of years. I bought this camera because it is not that expensive, so one can always upgrade. Some good and bad things:

- Steady shot makes it possible to take very sharp pictures at 1/15.

- Quite decent performance up to ASA 800. I can go up to ASA 12,800, which results in noise, but also sharp pictures in very low light. If you like me hate using the flash, this is great. I'd rather have grain than flat flash light.

- Very sharp live viewfinder. I cannot do without this facility anymore. Not many higher-end DSLR cameras have this function yet.

- The autofocus does not work that well in low light. I don't know if other cameras are better. However, the Manual Focus Live Viewfinder function is very good when using manual focus in low light and low contrast settings.

- The camera isn't well prepared for HDR (high dynamic range). There is a built in function (works just so so), but I'd rater be able to do bracketed exposures in 1 or 2 EV steps. That is not possible. I can do bracketed exposures in 0.3 or 0.7 EV steps but that isn't really useful for HDR. Clearly Sony is holding back on performance for the next model in 2010.

- The camera fits okay in my standard male sized hands. Bigger might fit better but it is also nice that the camera is not bulky.

- Information panel is informative, except for ASA level when using ASA Auto setting. It would have been very nice to know what ASA level the camera decide to use when in Program mode.



If you buy this camera, skip the 18-55 lens and go for the 18-250 lens instead Sony SAL18250 Alpha DT 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 High Magnification Zoom Lens w/Lens Hood. That is a good allround lens, a bit slow but an amazing range, 27-375mm equivalent. I actually don't find a 200mm zoom that useful, but when you can go up to 375mm new opportunities open up. If you want to spend some more, get the 50mm f/1.4 Sony 50mm f/1.4 Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Camera. That lens will function like 75mm, which is not optimal but that is really the only chance of getting a wide open aperture lens. (Sony also sells a 35mm f/1.4, but that is very expensive and has received poor reviews.) The advantage with the 50mm f/1.4 lens is that it is full-frame so it can be used when you later upgrade to a fullformat camera.

Have had my A700 for almost a year & do NOT have a single scratch on it. Read these reviews & bought one. Fits great, does not affect the viewing & the cost was OK. Now, I do not think that the protector is as good (hardness) as it should be. Got tons of scratches within days to a week. Took it off again & haven't had a scratch on the actual LCD screen. It may only slightly protect the LCD from breakage but is too easy to scratch!

Appears that if you use your camera daily/often then you will be buying replacements monthly (if you want to keep the viewing clear of scratches). Then the cost of ownership goes up & value down. Just my 2 cents. My opinion is that if it were made of the exact same material as the actual LCD screen (even if a bit thicker than this product), it would be more useful. I'd gladly pay the extra price for it.

Im usually satisfied with the Sony products Ive purchased for my A700 but this is one exception...



The LCD Protector Cover for the A700 is an item you DO need in order to protect that big LCD screen in your camera. The mere fact of using the camera poses a threat to the screen of becoming scratched, and its WAY WAY WAY cheaper to replace one of these than the actual LCD screen (which may mean replacing the whole body) thats why this item is required.



However, unlike other camera makers' protective covers, this one isnt all that good.



For exaample, the Nikon covers protect the whole screen and seal the area around it, and the A700's cover doesnt do that.



It leaves a small open gap between it and the screen, which allows dust to get inside and stick to the screen due to the fact it (the screen) has charge and attracts dust particles. This poses a problem when reviewing pictures and that weird speck leads you to believe the sensor is dirty or distracts you from the image.



Another problem is that under certain angles, it creates internal flares which makes the reviewing of pictures hard. I dont know if its an inherent effect due to how light bounces on the plastic or if the kind of plastic used has something to do with this.



Another option to protect the screen is to buy protective film and attach it directly, but that will only protect against scratches, not bumps.



This product certainly has its flaws and it may be expensive for some due to its shortcomings but you got to consider that it at least protects the screen from some dust, bumps or scratches. And its far more wise to pay for this than to have to pay 300 bucks or more in case the LCD is scratched too much or cracked due to use.



I do recommend this accessory but not completely, I suggest you look for other options to protect your screen, and if you dont find something better, then go for this one. Like I already said, between this and a repair, its better to have this.



And on the bright side, if something happens to this, you can always replace it at a small cost.

This is a well-made case and very usable for those with limited equipment to carry; but the listing says it to be 12.6 X 7.1 X 10.8 when actually measured at 11.1 X 7.5 X 8.5, producing a cramped arrangement for camera and attached zoom, flash, battery charger, & other related items.
