I bought my Zune in October 2009 and I'm writing this review six months later. I can honestly say, older MP3 players such as the Creative Labs Zen Xtra Jukebox is ten times BETTER than this MP3 player. Why? My Creative Lab MP3 player was bought in 2004...there was no syncing. You just transfered music files. Thise days have been gone for some time. So, I read so much about this and how the Microsoft Zune in many ways is better than the iPod, but now.....NO GOOD.



This 120GB MP3 player, in many ways, is a nice sounding device with a little of different things - games, radio, purchasing music from radio, video, photos....pretty much anything you can get in 2010. That's the good...



The bad totally outweighs the good. On a normal day, I have about 16,700 songs stored. There's a reason why I say "normal day". CONSTANTLY, this device freezes up and the only way to get it back to normal working is to unfreeze it by holding the back button and pressing the top part of the pad. Hold it for about 10 seconds and it reboots. Now you're dead. WHEN THIS THING REBOOTS, YOU LOOSE EVERYTHING!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Can this get anymore frustrating? So then, when I go home I have to load everything up again from my external drive to the device...it could take 5 hours!!!!



Who has the time to bring these things in for servicing??? It's easier to throw the damn thing out the window and buy a different device!! And this is what I will do...Apple, here I come!!

I've had my Zune exactly a year now so I think I can give this an honest review. I bought the pink Zune 8G originally for my daughter and have been responsbile for all it's content as she's only 10. I liked the idea so much I bought a black 120G for myself. Because the 8G was so limited space wise we sold hers and bought her a red 120G just like mine. They are TERRIFIC. We have a Zune Pass so we have unlimited amounts of music we can listen to and have burned all our personal CDs to put in our collection. I purchased a software program to convert our DVD collection and have them on our Zunes as well (a lot of DVDs actually come with a digital copy for this purpose). We have also purchased additional Zune TV content through their Marketplace. We take them everywhere with us and I routinely fall asleep to my "relaxation" gentle rain music every night, my daughter falls asleep to "crickets and summer nights" My husband didn't initially want one but after using mine about a month he confessed he would like one and I bought him one for our anniversary and they are inseparable now so we each have our own Zune 120G. I have about 25 podcasts loaded that I listen to routinely (video and audio) and love having my music close at hand and being able to listen to something new with my Zune Pass. Overall, it's one of the single best purchases for my family I've ever made. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! Also, the Zune Marketplace is great. I downloaded ITunes just to get a comparison and Zune is WAY easier to navigate. I know Apple sells way more Ipods but Zune has my vote, hands down.

Have had it for a couple months now and I love it. First and foremost is the huge hard drive which lets me place my entire music collection on the device, plus movies, pics, etc. It seamlessly integrates my personal collection (ripped CDs etc.), stuff I buy from Amazon or other sources, and stuff I get from the Zune service. The Zune service itself is pretty cool - $15 a month lets me permanently buy 10 songs per month and download unlimited songs for use as long as I keep the service. When you take out the $10 for 10 songs (pretty standard rate for downloads) basically for a $5 rental fee, I'm downloading dozens of new albums and rediscovering old favorites each month. The service also includes some analytics / heuristics on your listening patterns and has actually suggested some new music that I've ended up liking. True that some of the indie stuff I like isn't available through Zune, but I don't think it's a big deal to go buy a song or album here and there from Amazon or some other vendor. Net, it's worked flawlessly, setup easily, i can listen to anything I have from roger miller to the ring cycle, from dr dre to doc watson, or from billie holiday to hole at the push of a button, and the zune service has helped renew my excitement for new music.

I really an not into Apple products. I've had ipods for years....I got a Zune 120 about 5 months ago and I got the "5" error just this weekend. It was working GREAT then pow...$200 bucks down the drain. O well I guess it's back to iPod :(. MS should just stick to software and not hardware.

 

 "ZUNE WILL DESTROY YOUR LIFE!" 2010-04-05

When you have a problem with your Zune, you will want to have it repaired. You will first search for a local store to have your Zune repaired at. You will go to Best Buy hoping that they can repair your Zune at their repair center but alas, they cannot. So you will go home and search the Zune website for information about getting a Zune repaired. You will pay $80 for your repair. You will ship it to Texas and wait patiently for approximately 3 wks for its return. Finally UPS will drop off your Zune. You will open the box and realize that it isn't your Zune at all but someone else's refurbished Zune. No big deal- as long as it works! But it won't work. You will plug it into your computer and it will make strange noises before displaying a msg that reads "contact support." You will go to the Zune website. It will have you try a number of troubleshooting tricks before giving you a shipping label to allow you to ship it back to them yet again. You will be unwilling to part w/ your Zune for another 3 wks so you will call tech support before boxing it up. The automated system will not recognize the word "Zune." It will transfer you to a person who will ask for all of your information before telling you that Zune has its own service line. She will transfer you. You will be on hold for 26 mins. Then a recording will say "We're sorry but we are having difficulty connecting your call," and disconnect on you. So you will send the Zune back to Texas for repair. UPS will bring you a box about 3 wks later. This time the Zune you receive will not even be the same color as the one you'd originally sent out. But whatever- so long as it works! But again, it won't work. It will connect to your computer this time and take 2 and a half hours to download your music to it. You will have it playing in your car and all of the sudden it will stop playing, make some posessed robot noises, then display "contact support." You ship it to Texas. It comes back. Guess what? The THIRD replacement they'll send you WON'T WORK. You will call support. You will wait on hold (only 12 minutes this time) and someone will actually pick up this time (lucky!). The representative will apologize and say that this time they will give you expedited shipping for your Zune's trip to Texas. She'll tell you that she's putting a note on the service request to make sure that the next one they ship to you actually works. This will strike you as odd b/c you are a strange creature who thinks that they should be checking the refurbs before sending them out regardless. You will vow that if the next Zune they send doesn't work that Microsoft will regret their mistreatment of you. But you will realize that there's no throwing punches at Microsoft. You will wait for your next junk refurb and write a nasty review of the Zune product that no one will read- hoping to put a dent in the sales of a corporation who at the end of the day will never even know you exist.

The product that I ordered was an 8GB Zune flash that had been refurbished. The Zune was in excellent condition; however, the cable that was included was almost completely useless. It was an off-brand of Zune cable and would not register a charge.

I own an 8 gig Ipod and I like it. The only thing I don't like is that to get tv content one has to buy it at $1.99 a pop. The Zune had the advantage of being able to use tv shows that I had recorded in media center on my computer. This can be done with an Ipod as well but I thought that by getting the Zune (a microsoft product) it would probably work better with media center (also microsoft)



Well the Zune comes in the mail and I try to turn it on. No life. I plug it into the usb on my computer and this battery charge symbol briefly lights (for about 3 seconds) but the player will not come on. I am a little worried but I figure I will leave it plugged in overnight and just see. In the meantime I download the software. It hung up twice while downloading but finally seemed to work. But it could not see my Zune. I tried several usb ports etc. Then gave up and went to bed.



Next morning I try to turn on the Zune and it turns on! Also the computer can see it now. But it says I have to putdate my player software. Ok, download that and it hangs up while installing. I let it sit for awhile and finally click out of it. It seems to have installed tho because I can sync the zune and such. Now I follow the directions in Media Center to be able to synch my recorded tv (the whole reason for buying the Zune) No matter what I do I cannot get my recorded tv to show up to synch with the Zune. Tried looking online, etc.



As a last ditch sort of thing prior to returning the Zune I decide to call Microsoft. I have had some very bad experiences with Microsoft service so I am not hopeful but I give it a shot. Of course its someone from some foreign country and she is speaking from a script. But she does answer the phone pretty quickly, I will give her that. The questions she was asking me made it pretty clear she had no clue how to help me so I politely asked for her supervisor. Now I get transferred to a woman (God bless her) who was actually able to deal with my problem and knowledgably directed me on how to deal with the issue. Its quirky and a bit time consuming - but it does work.



Apparently the Zune cannot handle shows that are recorded in a format that media center records them in (not sure if you can change that - I may try to research that further) The format has to be mp4. But you can use Windows Movie Maker to convert your Media center shows into MP4 (I dont have the publication but if anyone needs it put a comment on this and I will get it for you) You can then save the converted files into a folder that you can program the Zune software to monitor and then you can synch those files into your Zune. The first time I did it - it took over an hour for the file to convert but I did it at top quality and possibly lower quality would be quicker. It did synch and it does look very good on my Zune. Since I only need around one hour of programming a day to take to the gym with me I think I am going to keep this Zune. Stuff I record in Media Center, since it is automatic, tends to stack up on me and this way I will be getting to watch these programs plus not having to pay for them.



So this was not a smooth buying experience. To compare to an ipod, for example, I did not have any software problems or anything with my ipod so it was definately a much smoother set up experience. The Zune and my 8gig ipod have identical dimensions and screen sizes. The Zune might be a little thicker. Also their cost was nearly identical. For me, the savings of $1.99 an episode makes the zune a good purchase.



Update - I have now owned the Zune a week or so and I can honestly say I like it. There are some things the Ipod does better but there are some things the Zune does better. For one thing you can watch tv recorded in Media Center (a little clunky but not too hard) That saves you $1.99 per episode. Another benefit I have decided is that you can listen to radio (yes you can do this with the Ipod as well) but it seems to be that the Zune does it better. The Zune scans for channels and then shows you the station and what type of music they place (soft rock, country etc.) The reception is better also - much less fuzzy then the same stations with my Ipod.



So if you can live without a camera and itunes and you like media center I would say the Zune may just be more to your preference then the Ipod. I have both but I quite like the Zune.

For a while, I owned a cheap Sandisk Clip player, which was terrific, until it burned out. Because I use my MP3 player so much, I decided to splurge for the Zune, despite my qualms about Microsoft products.



The $100 Zune died in just a few weeks -- much faster than the cheap Sandisk. Microsoft does not make it easy to send the Zune in for repair; you have to go through a lengthy on-line process. Now, two weeks after I sent the device in for its under-warranty repair, it is still in the "sorting room" (according to the telephone help person) and has not even begun its journey to the fix-it shop. I'm told that the Zune might be sent back to me in another two weeks -- making their total turnaround time for repair a month.



In the meantime, I bought another Sandisk Clip for $25. It's such a great little machine -- with several features that are lacking in the Zune (ie, voice recording). Now I wish I'd never wasted my money on the Zune!

I think that it is a gigantic improvement over the iPod. The use of the player as well as the ability to use the software has eliminated what used to be a torture when I had an iPod. The only thing that I think that they could improve upon is the radio reception. I work in a stone building and I think that doesn't help the reception but if I move to certain places on my desk I will pick up a particular station, but if I move it somewhere else, I lose the radio station. Other than that, it is GREAT!

 "A little misleading but so far so good." 2010-04-16

I own an 8 gig Ipod and I like it. The only thing I don't like is that to get tv content one has to buy it at $1.99 a pop. The Zune had the advantage of being able to use tv shows that I had recorded in media center on my computer. This can be done with an Ipod as well but I thought that by getting the Zune (a microsoft product) it would probably work better with media center (also microsoft)



Well the Zune comes in the mail and I try to turn it on. No life. I plug it into the usb on my computer and this battery charge symbol briefly lights (for about 3 seconds) but the player will not come on. I am a little worried but I figure I will leave it plugged in overnight and just see. In the meantime I download the software. It hung up twice while downloading but finally seemed to work. But it could not see my Zune. I tried several usb ports etc. Then gave up and went to bed.



Next morning I try to turn on the Zune and it turns on! Also the computer can see it now. But it says I have to putdate my player software. Ok, download that and it hangs up while installing. I let it sit for awhile and finally click out of it. It seems to have installed tho because I can sync the zune and such. Now I follow the directions in Media Center to be able to synch my recorded tv (the whole reason for buying the Zune) No matter what I do I cannot get my recorded tv to show up to synch with the Zune. Tried looking online, etc.



As a last ditch sort of thing prior to returning the Zune I decide to call Microsoft. I have had some very bad experiences with Microsoft service so I am not hopeful but I give it a shot. Of course its someone from some foreign country and she is speaking from a script. But she does answer the phone pretty quickly, I will give her that. The questions she was asking me made it pretty clear she had no clue how to help me so I politely asked for her supervisor. Now I get transferred to a woman (God bless her) who was actually able to deal with my problem and knowledgably directed me on how to deal with the issue. Its quirky and a bit time consuming - but it does work.



Apparently the Zune cannot handle shows that are recorded in a format that media center records them in (not sure if you can change that - I may try to research that further) The format has to be mp4. But you can use Windows Movie Maker to convert your Media center shows into MP4 (I dont have the publication but if anyone needs it put a comment on this and I will get it for you) You can then save the converted files into a folder that you can program the Zune software to monitor and then you can synch those files into your Zune. The first time I did it - it took over an hour for the file to convert but I did it at top quality and possibly lower quality would be quicker. It did synch and it does look very good on my Zune. Since I only need around one hour of programming a day to take to the gym with me I think I am going to keep this Zune. Stuff I record in Media Center, since it is automatic, tends to stack up on me and this way I will be getting to watch these programs plus not having to pay for them.



So this was not a smooth buying experience. To compare to an ipod, for example, I did not have any software problems or anything with my ipod so it was definately a much smoother set up experience. The Zune and my 8gig ipod have identical dimensions and screen sizes. The Zune might be a little thicker. Also their cost was nearly identical. For me, the savings of $1.99 an episode makes the zune a good purchase.



Update - I have now owned the Zune a week or so and I can honestly say I like it. There are some things the Ipod does better but there are some things the Zune does better. For one thing you can watch tv recorded in Media Center (a little clunky but not too hard) That saves you $1.99 per episode. Another benefit I have decided is that you can listen to radio (yes you can do this with the Ipod as well) but it seems to be that the Zune does it better. The Zune scans for channels and then shows you the station and what type of music they place (soft rock, country etc.) The reception is better also - much less fuzzy then the same stations with my Ipod.



So if you can live without a camera and itunes and you like media center I would say the Zune may just be more to your preference then the Ipod. I have both but I quite like the Zune.

For a while, I owned a cheap Sandisk Clip player, which was terrific, until it burned out. Because I use my MP3 player so much, I decided to splurge for the Zune, despite my qualms about Microsoft products.



The $100 Zune died in just a few weeks -- much faster than the cheap Sandisk. Microsoft does not make it easy to send the Zune in for repair; you have to go through a lengthy on-line process. Now, two weeks after I sent the device in for its under-warranty repair, it is still in the "sorting room" (according to the telephone help person) and has not even begun its journey to the fix-it shop. I'm told that the Zune might be sent back to me in another two weeks -- making their total turnaround time for repair a month.



In the meantime, I bought another Sandisk Clip for $25. It's such a great little machine -- with several features that are lacking in the Zune (ie, voice recording). Now I wish I'd never wasted my money on the Zune!

I think that it is a gigantic improvement over the iPod. The use of the player as well as the ability to use the software has eliminated what used to be a torture when I had an iPod. The only thing that I think that they could improve upon is the radio reception. I work in a stone building and I think that doesn't help the reception but if I move to certain places on my desk I will pick up a particular station, but if I move it somewhere else, I lose the radio station. Other than that, it is GREAT!

i love the zune. i was alittle disappointed in the appearance of it. it really does look like it has been refurbished. the battery seems to run down quite quickly. i was under the impression i would also get earbuds, but....the sound and video quality is excellent

 

 "Upgrading hurts the 30G" 2010-04-10

I bought my 30G Zune a couple of years ago and I have to say that I love it. I have adult children who have other MP3 players--ipods included--and I can honestly say my Zune continues to out-class them all!



HOWEVER (and the reason for the poor rating) like many electronic devices, there are software upgrades. Microsoft doesn't seem to be concerned that the upgrades really mess with this first generation product!!! Error messages, frozen devices, songs that no longer play, etc. It is a shame, since overall the product is absolutely wonderful!



Just google "frozen zune", "error messages", "zune cuts off for no reason" and you will see there are lots of problems going on. And you will also see that Microsoft is notably "silent" about the cause of the problem, and amazingly "incompetent" when it comes to fixing it--offering silly suggestions (band-aids) such as reformatting (which by the way may buy you some time by temporarily "fixing" the problem).



Here's what is so ironic about the entire situation--MS made an absolutely amazing product! It would easily last for years! But...



(wait for it, wait for it)



How would they make their money if people kept the old product for years and years? Hmmm...starting to see the big picture, aren't you?



I'd really like to see MS just step up to the plate and offer us "oldies" a real solution (like an upgrade that worked for us) instead of silently twisting our arms to force us to buy a new device. I teach dance classes and it has been difficult with such an unreliable device. I can't afford a new Zune at the moment.



I know what I'm going to say next will sound like a contradiction, but it is it is giving the company their due for creating a good product. So, for those of you looking for an amazing player--I will still have to say go with a Zune--just go for the latest generation you will be awed at the quality of the player! None of the iTunes issues!

I got this player from ebay. I like the storage. It isn't too much to be overwhelming, but enough that when a favorite artist made a new song you'll have room. I like that I can put a picture of my own choosing for the wallpaper.



I don't lik that it doesn't continue from where you left off. I wish that there was an ebook reader and build-in speakers .



I think that it's a nice player for what I paid for it. It is my main mp3 player now. Would I get another Zune? I don't know, probably if it had an ebook reader.

Well, it is a refurbished Zune, I can tell that because it tweaks out a little bit..stops in the middle of a song sometimes..but its about half what I paid for my last Zune..other than that I love Zunes, I already had the software downloaded on my computer so it didn't take long to put my 3700 songs on there.

The Zune is a nightmare! I got it for Christmas in 2008, and was initially impressed. It is easy to use, can store a lot of data, and the battery life is long. What could be wrong? Well, I had my first encounter with trouble on December 31, 2008. Apparently, because Microsoft screwed up, every single Zune in the world crashed that day because of a leap-year bug. Microsoft instructed Zune users to let the battery die and wait until midnight GMT on New Years Day. On the surface, that sounds fine, but every time a battery in a device drains, it loses a little bit of potential charge.



It then worked for several months, and I was once again a happy customer. Three months later, I had another encounter with disaster. The factory-shipped Zune sync cable got stuck to the Zune and could not come out. I knew that this could not work, so I managed to get it out, but it came out out-of-alignment. So, I could not sync it or plug it into my pc. So, once the battery died, my Zune was finished. Thankfully, after spending 2 hours on the phone with a Bangladeshi phone support employee, I could send my Zune in for shipping. I got a replacement Zune, and was happy for about 6 more months.



Then, I had a weird bug with my Zune and had to reinstall the firmware. This actually happened several times throughout the Zune's life. After that, I was a happy customer again until last week. My Zune finished charging with the pc, and then would not start. When plugged into the PC, it would, but kept continuously resetting for eternity. I called Microsoft and they said that it was out of warranty and they could not replace it, unless I paid them the full price of a new device to do so. So, being the hacker I am, I opened the Zune to repair it, but could not succeed. It isn't worth the trouble, anyway.



In short, do not buy a Zune because it has a lifespan of about 1 year. It runs proprietary software, and most of your videos will not play on it. If you plug your Zune into a PC without Windows installed, your Zune Player will crash. If your Zune comes into contact with static electricity, it will shut off, which means I cannot even do my laundry without it resetting. It will normally reset without any apparent trigger a few times every month. I have had two Zunes, and both have been buggy.
